Having Sex with Racist

I tell a story of my sexual encounter with an older white gay man in Brisbane, revealing the nature of racial power imbalance between a gay man referred to as ‘Asian’ and another classified as ‘white’. This story is inspired by my PhD research in which I interviewed 11 gay men from Southeast and East Asian countries about their sexual health literacy.

In this flash fiction, I’m revisiting a moment in which I encountered a stranger on a train in Bradford, a city I recently moved into in 2024. This random meeting brings up a memory of my past. This story was written as a response to the prompt about ‘ghost’ from the editor of The Magpie.
